Aging isn’t something we look forward to. To make things worse, some of us develop the superficial symptoms of aging ahead of schedule, like fine lines and wrinkles.
There’s a very good chance that you’ve heard of Botox. It’s been discussed in countless magazines, movies, TV shows, the news, and a host of other spots. You’re probably wondering what Botox is and what it can do for you. Botox is a minimally invasive injectable treatment that eases away fine lines and wrinkles.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox Cosmetic is a product derived from botulinum toxin. This toxin is produced by a bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum. The bacterium is usually found in tinned foods that have expired or been contaminated. When such foods are ingested, it can cause botulism, which is a severe medical condition that can lead to death if not treated immediately.
However, in minute and carefully regulated amounts, the toxin does not cause any such health issues and can instead be safely used for cosmetic purposes. When injected into contracted facial muscles, it allows these muscles to relax. When the muscles aren’t contracted, the skin relaxes and wrinkles disappear.
This is how Botox treats age lines. As a result, your skin looks younger. So as long as your wrinkles are the kind that have formed due to the movement of facial muscles, Botox can help you address them. Examples of these include crow’s feet, horizontal brow wrinkles, and vertical lines between the eyebrows.
How Many Botox Treatments Does One Need?
Only a single Botox session will be required to create effective results, which will last for around three to four months. The number of injections and Botox units injected during a session may vary from patient to patient depending on individual aesthetic goals. You will need to come in for a follow-up treatment after the effects wear off in order to maintain the results.
Is Any Preparation Required?
A Botox treatment does not require any kind of special preparation before the treatment date. Prior to injection during your treatment session, your skin will be cleansed and a topical anesthetic may be applied.
After Your Treatment
Following your Botox treatment, you will be allowed to return to your regular schedule immediately. Because the treatment is always very quick – usually around 15 to 20 minutes – you can come in during a lunch break at work, get the treatment done, and then go right back to work!
The full effects of your Botox treatment will appear in seven to ten days. Exercise, hot tubs, and saunas will have to be avoided for a few hours or even a few days.
